About

Movematics is a learning platform that allows children to access mathematics through dance movements. Although mathematics, a field whose quintessence lies in rationality and structured reasoning, may appear to have little in common with the free emotional expressions pursued in the art of dance, research shows that the two subjects are inextricably linked. Mathematicians strive to detect patterns in space and time, just as dancers utilize the same parameters - play in rhythms, repetitive movements, and shape formations, to name a few– when both choreographing and memorizing a piece. Hence, by combining these two fields, this website strives to provide the synergic effect on children beginning to absorb and retain mathematical information. Rather than a passive learning environment in which children are individually expected to absorb information given through lectures and worksheets, Movematics aims to make the comprehension process more natural by engaging the kinaesthetic senses associated with dance. In accordance with studies showing that incorporating such senses not only promotes active participation but also allows more cognitive connections with mathematical academic concepts, the curriculum will enable children to approach mathematics with renewed vigor and motivation to delve deeper into this fascinating world of numbers, patterns, and shapes.

Movematics is specifically designed for preschool and elementary school children, as well as students who may prefer more interactive alternatives to traditional methods of teaching. Chapters are divided largely by mathematical concepts, starting from counting numbers and counting shapes to grouping, detecting patterns, and performing simple arithmetics. Each section includes a dance video that introduces the concept followed by interactive practice problems.
